Where GCDC Releases Go
Grant County Detention Center is the adult county detention facility at Ridge Road in Silver City. A person may leave GCDC for the community after bond, release on recognizance, a court order, dismissal in the controlling matter, time served, or completion of a local sentence. None of those labels should be guessed from the fact that a name is gone from the public roster. The release transaction and the court docket answer different parts of the question.
Someone may also leave the building while remaining in custody. A sentenced felony transfer can lead to the New Mexico Corrections Department. A federal matter may lead to the United States Marshals Service and later the Bureau of Prisons. An immigration transfer must be followed with ICE. A movement to another county or a court-ordered treatment placement also is not the same as an unrestricted community release. The receiving agency named in the GCDC movement record is the next place to check.
Key distinction: “Released from GCDC” describes departure from one jail. It does not always mean the person is free from all custody.
Confirm a GCDC Release
Begin at the official Grant County Corrections page and open its Prisoner In Custody link. The list is useful to rule in a current GCDC listing. It is not a demonstrated historical release archive. If a name is missing, preserve the spelling and identifiers used, then move to the jail and court records rather than declaring a release.

The jail record is strongest for the physical event. The court controls the bond, release order, sentence, dismissal, warrant, and case disposition. An order signed at a stated time does not prove when staff finished the release process. In the other direction, a jail timestamp alone may not explain what happened to each charge. Operational questions about present custody, release processing, property, or the correct waiting area go to GCDC. Requests for an existing past record should use the county public-records channel. A phone answer can help with a live issue, but a written release report is the better source when the date, reason, or destination must be documented.

Submit a past-record request through Grant County NextRequest. Identify the full name, date of birth or booking number if known, and a narrow booking or release period. Ask for the booking sheet, release date and time, release reason or disposition, release authority, transfer destination if one was recorded, and the public booking photograph tied to that booking. Ask for a fee estimate. The county’s current electronic and booking-photo charges were not verified in the research.

A useful request names existing records and fields. It does not ask staff to investigate or create a new explanation. The available data can differ by booking, and protected information may be redacted. These are the researched fields to request, not a claim that each field is public in every case.

Medical, juvenile, victim-identifying, security-sensitive, sealed, and expunged material can be withheld or redacted. A custodian supplies existing public records. The custodian is not required to certify that no other agency has a hold. When a certified copy is needed, ask whether certification is available instead of assuming an online screen is certified.
About Grant County Detention
A county procurement document describes GCDC as responsible for adult male and female detention. It says Grant County does not currently house juveniles there. The facility includes operations, classification, administration, food, commissary, and medical functions. Those facts describe an adult county jail, not a state prison and not a federal or ICE detention center.

These are dated planning figures. A separate 2014 orientation policy supplies historical context but is not a current release handbook. Neither source states the current population or legal capacity. A December 2025 local report later described 79 intakes, 83 releases, and an average daily population of 91 for that single month. It also described RISE participants both in the jail and in the community. That snapshot shows turnover and continued program contact, but it should not be converted into an annual rate or current count.
After a GCDC Release
No current official source states GCDC’s release hours, exit door, family waiting point, weekend procedure, or property-return rules. The jail mail page says certain money instruments and foreign currency are stored as property, but it does not state how or when property is returned. Ask GCDC about identification, funds, authorized pickup, and deadlines before making a trip.
Ridge Road also creates a transport issue. Historical reporting described a long walk toward major services and discussion of donated Corre Caminos passes and release times aligned with buses. Those were historical reports, not proof of today’s schedule or a guaranteed ride. After a community release, the next required place may be court, a treatment provider, or the Silver City probation and parole office. After a transfer, the next place to search is the receiving custody system. Confirm the destination before planning pickup. That small step prevents a roster disappearance from being mistaken for a walk-out release.
Verify Grant County Jail Records
New Mexico’s Inspection of Public Records Act supplies the general access framework for an existing GCDC release report. Grant County’s request form asks for contact details and a description with reasonable particularity. It refers copying charges to a county resolution, allows a requester to set a fee ceiling or ask for a call before higher charges, and permits advance payment. Since the current electronic-copy and booking-photo rates were not verified, request an estimate rather than naming a fee.
A precise request can ask for one person’s booking and release file or an existing release log for a defined period. For a period request, state the start and end date and ask for public release time, disposition, and receiving agency. Also state that the county need not create a new report if no such report exists. That wording helps the custodian locate the closest existing record without turning the request into a question-and-answer assignment.
Once the response arrives, compare the booking number, court, charge, and person identifiers across every document. A booking photograph belongs to one arrest-processing event and should not be attached to a different case. If a field looks wrong, save the record, URL, access time, and supporting order, then contact the agency that owns that field. The court corrects its docket. Grant County addresses its jail record. NMCD, BOP, or ICE addresses the receiving system. This division of responsibility makes the final release account much easier to defend.
